RESUMO

Objective: In this study, we investigated the effect and mechanism of action of eugenol on oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-induced abnormal proliferation and migration of human vascular smooth muscle cells (HVSMCs). Methods: HVSMCs were treated with 100 ug/mL ox-LDL for 24 hours to establish a cell model. After 1-hour pretreatment, eugenol at concentrations of 5, 25, and 50 uM was added. Cell viability was assessed using an MTT assay, PCNA expression was detected using Western blot, cell cycle distribution was analyzed using flow cytometry, and cell migration ability was evaluated using wound healing and Transwell migration assays. To investigate the mechanisms, Ang II receptors were inhibited by 1000 nM valsartan, MFG-E8 was knocked down by shRNA, MCP-1 was inhibited by siRNA, and MFG-E8 was overexpressed using plasmids. Results: The findings from this study elucidated the stimulatory impact of ox-LDL on the proliferation and functionality of HVSMCs. Different concentrations of eugenol effectively mitigated the enhanced activity of HVSMCs induced by ox-LDL, with 50 uM eugenol exhibiting the most pronounced inhibitory effect. Flow cytometry and Western blot results showed ox-LDL reduced G1 phase cells and increased PCNA expression, while 50 uM eugenol inhibited ox-LDL-induced HVSMC proliferation. In wound healing and Transwell migration experiments, the ox-LDL group showed larger cell scratch filling and migration than the control group, both of which were inhibited by 50 uM eugenol. Inhibiting the Ang II/MFG-E8/MCP-1 signaling cascade mimicked eugenol's effects, while MFG-E8 overexpression reversed eugenol's inhibitory effect. Conclusion: Eugenol can inhibit the proliferation and migration of ox-LDL-induced HVSMCs by inhibiting Ang II/MFG-E8/MCP-1 signaling cascade, making it a potential therapeutic drug for atherosclerosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Exposure to heavy metals has been widely recognized as a risk factor for human health. However, there is limited information on the effects of blood heavy metals on gallstones. This study aims to investigate the relationship between blood heavy metals and gallstones using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS: 7192 participants aged 20 years or older with complete information were included in the study. Serum concentrations of heavy metals were determined by inductively coupled plasma kinetic reaction cell mass spectrometry. Gallstones were presented by standard questionnaires. Logistic regression, nonlinear, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses were used to estimate the association between blood heavy metals and gallstones. RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression showed that the highest quintile of blood selenium (Se) was associated with a higher risk of gallstones compared with the lowest quintile (OR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.16-2.36), particularly in individuals who were under 65 years of age, females, non-Hispanic Whites, non-drinkers, obese, and had a college education or higher. There was no correlation between blood cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and gallstones in the total population. Restricted cubic spline curves showed that a negative correlation was observed between blood Cd (OR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.710-1.00), Hg (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.78-0.97) and gallstones when Cd < 0.302 µg/L and Hg < 3.160 µg/L. CONCLUSIONS: Blood Se was an independent risk factor for gallstones, particularly in individuals under 65 years old, females, non-Hispanic Whites, non-drinkers, obese, and had a college education or higher. Furthermore, blood Cd and Hg were associated with a reduced risk of gallstones within a certain range.

RESUMO

Although terahertz (THz) spectroscopy demonstrates great application prospects in the fields of fingerprint sensing and detection, traditional sensing schemes face unavoidable limitations in the analysis of trace-amount samples. In this Letter, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, absorption spectroscopy enhancement strategy based on a defect one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D-PC) structure is proposed to achieve strong wideband terahertz wave-matter interactions for trace-amount samples. Based on the Fabry-Pérot resonance effect, the local electric field in a thin-film sample can be boosted by changing the length of the photonic crystal defect cavity, so that the wideband signal of the sample fingerprint can be greatly enhanced. This method exhibits a great absorption enhancement factor, of about 55 times, in a wide terahertz frequency range, facilitating the identification of different samples, such as thin α-lactose films. The investigation reported in this Letter provides a new research idea for enhancing the wide terahertz absorption spectroscopy of trace samples.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy of micro steel plate and Kirschner needle oblique and transverse internal fixation of adjacent metacarpal bone in the treatment of metacarpal diaphyseal oblique fracture. METHODS: Fifty-nine patients with metacarpal diaphyseal oblique fractures admitted between January 2018 and September 2021 were selected as the study subjects and divided into the observation group (29 cases) and the control group (30 cases) based on different internal fixation methods. The observation group was treated with Kirschner wire oblique and transverse internal fixation of adjacent metacarpal bones, while the control group was treated with micro steel plate internal fixation. Postoperative complications, operation time, incision length, fracture healing time, treatment cost, and metacarpophalangeal function were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: No incision or Kirschner wire infections occurred in the 59 patients, except for one in the observation group. No fixation loosening, rupture, or loss of fracture reduction occurred in any of the patients. The operation time and incision length in the observation group were (20.5±4.2) min and (1.6±0.2) cm, respectively, which were significantly shorter than those in the control group (30.8±5.6) min and (4.3±0.8) cm (P<0.05). The treatment cost and fracture healing time in the observation group were (3 804.5±300.8) yuan and (7.2±1.1) weeks, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in the control group (9 906.9±860.6) yuan and (9.3±1.7) weeks (P<0.05). The excellent and good rate of metacarpophalangeal joint function in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group at 1, 2, and 3 months after operation (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the two groups at 6 months after operation (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Micro steel plate internal fixation and Kirschner wire oblique and transverse internal fixation of adjacent metacarpal bones are both viable surgical methods for treating metacarpal diaphyseal oblique fractures. However, the latter has the advantages of causing less surgical trauma, shorter operation time, better fracture healing, lower cost of fixation materials, and no need for secondary incision and removal of internal fixation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of heat-reinforcing needling on the expression of purinergic ligand-gated ion channel 7 receptor(P2X7R),Nodlike receptor protein 3(NLRP3) and Caspase-1 in synovium tissues of knee joint of rabbits with cold syndrome rheumatoid arthritis(RA),so as to explore the anti-inflammatory mechanism of heat reinforcing needling in the treatment of RA. METHODS: Thirty male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into normal group, model group, reinforcing-reducing needling group(RRG), heat-reinforcing needling group(HRG), and antagonist group(AG), with 6 rabbits in each group. The model of cold syndrome RA was established by ovalbumin combined with Freund's adjuvant and cryogenic freezing. Rabbits of RRG and HRG were treated with corresponding acupuncture techniques on both sides of "Zusanli"(ST36) for 30 min, once a day for 7 days; Rabbits of the AG was intraperitoneally injected with A438079(2.5 mg/kg), once a day for 7 days. After intervention, color Doppler ultrasound was used to observe the joint cavity effusion, synovial thickness and internal blood flow signal. The histomorphological changes of synovial tissues were observed by HE staining. Quantitative real-time PCR method was used to detect the mRNA expression levels of P2X7R, NLRP3, and Caspase-1 in synovial tissues. Western blot was used to detect the protein expression of interleukin(IL)-1ß, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α in synovial tissues. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, the synovial tissues in the model group was thickened, linear and punctate blood flow signals were increased, joint effusion was obvious, synovial coating cells were enlarged, the synovial matrix was severely hyperplasia, inflammatory cells infiltration was obvious. The mRNAs expression levels of P2X7R, NLRP3, Caspase-1 and IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α proteins in synovial tissues were significantly increased(P<0.01). Compared with model group, abnormal blood flow signals, synovial thickness, joint effusion, proliferation of synovial matrix, inflammatory cell infiltration and synovial coating cells in the RRG, HRG and AG were improved. The mRNAs expression levels of P2X7R, NLRP3, Caspase-1 and IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α proteins in synovial tissues were decreased in the RRG, HRG and AG (P<0.05, P<0.01). Compared with the RRG, the above indexes were lower in the HRG and AG (P<0.05, P<0.01).There was no significant difference in all indexes above between the HRG and AG (P<0.01, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Heat reinforcing needling can improve synovial inflammation of RA, which may be related to regulating the expressions of P2X7R/NLRP3/Caspase-1 signaling pathway.

RESUMO

A multifunctional design based on vanadium dioxide (VO2) metamaterial structure is proposed. Broadband absorption, linear-to-linear (LTL) polarization conversion, linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization conversion, and total reflection can be achieved based on the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) of VO2. When the VO2 is in the metallic state, the multifunctional structure can be used as a broadband absorber. The results show that the absorption rate exceeds 90% in the frequency band of 2.17 - 4.94 THz, and the bandwidth ratio is 77.8%. When VO2 is in the insulator state, for the incident terahertz waves with a polarization angle of 45°, the structure works as a polarization converter. In this case, LTC polarization conversion can be obtained in the frequency band of 0.1 - 3.5 THz, and LTL polarization conversion also can be obtained in the frequency band of 3.5 - 6 THz, especially in the 3.755 - 4.856 THz band that the polarization conversion rate is over 90%. For the incident terahertz waves with a polarization angle of 0°, the metamaterial structure can be used as a total reflector. Additionally, impacts of geometrical parameters, incidence angle and polarization angle on the operating characteristics have also been investigated. The designed switchable multifunctional metasurfaces are promising for a wide range of applications in advanced terahertz research and smart applications.

RESUMO

In this paper, a hybrid vanadium dioxide (VO2)-graphene-based bifunctional metamaterial is proposed. The realization of the different functions of perfect transmission and high absorption is based on the insulator-metal phase transition of VO2 material. The Fermi energy level of graphene can be treated to dynamically tune the absorption and transmission rates of the metamaterial structure. As a result, when VO2 is in the insulating state, the designed metamaterial can be used as a filter providing three adjustable passbands with center frequencies of 1.892 THz, 1.124 THz, and 0.94 THz, and the corresponding transmittances reach 93.11%, 98.62%, and 90.01%, respectively. The filter also shows good stopband characteristics and exhibits good sensing performance at the resonant frequencies of 1.992 THz and 2.276 THz. When VO2 is in metal state, the metamaterial structure acts as a double-band absorber, with three absorption peaks (>90%) in the range of 0.684 THz to 0.924 THz, 2.86 THz to 3.04 THz, and 3.28 THz to 3.372 THz, respectively. The designed structure is insensitive to the polarization of vertically incident terahertz waves and still maintains good absorption performances over a large range of incidence angles. Finally, the effects of geometric parameters on the absorption and transmission properties of the hybrid bifunctional metamaterials have also been discussed. The switchable metamaterial structures proposed in this paper provide great potential in terahertz application fields, such as filtering, smart sensing, switching, tunable absorbers, and so on.

RESUMO

Terahertz (THz) absorption spectroscopy is a powerful tool for molecular label-free fingerprinting, but it faces a formidable hurdle in enhancing the broadband spectral signals in trace-amount analysis. In this paper, we propose a sensing method based on the geometry scanning of metal metasurfaces with spoof surface polarization sharp resonances by numerical simulation. This scheme shows a significant absorption enhancement factor of about 200 times in an ultra-wide terahertz band to enable the explicit identification of various analytes, such as a trace-amount thin lactose film samples. The proposed method provides a new, to the best of our knowledge, choice for the enhancement of wide terahertz absorption spectra, and paves the way for the detection of trace-amount chemical, organic, or biomedical materials in the terahertz regime.

RESUMO

A terahertz switchable metasurface with the function of absorption and polarization conversion is proposed. It consists of metal pattern layer - dielectric layer - VO2 layer - dielectric layer - metal pattern layer, and the photosensitive silicon is embedded in the metal pattern. When VO2 is in insulated state, the metasurface behaves as a linear polarization converter. The polarization conversion rate (PCR) is more than 90% at two frequency bands of 1.64 THz ∼ 1.91 THz and 2.35 THz ∼ 2.75 THz. The polarization converter has good asymmetric transmission ability. Moreover, the polarization conversion performance can be dynamically controlled by changing the conductivity of the photosensitive silicon. When VO2 is in metallic state, the metasurface becomes a terahertz bidirectional absorber, which exhibits different absorption properties under TE and TM waves with the maximum absorptance reaching to 100%. In addition, the absorption of TE and TM terahertz waves can be controlled at the specific frequency by changing the conductivity of photosensitive silicon. We also explore the application of dynamic control of polarization waves in the near-field image display.

RESUMO

In this paper, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, polymer-based negative curvature ring-core fiber (NC-RCF) is proposed and investigated. The hollow-core NC-RCF is composed of TOPAS as background material. The inner and outer negative curvature structure layers are connected to the annular area, and the orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes can propagate in the annular core. In the frequency region of 1.0-1.5 THz, the designed NC-RCF can stably transmit 82 OAM modes. Investigation results indicate that the effective refractive index differences between the corresponding HE and EH modes are above 10-4. The confinement losses of EH or HE modes are smaller than 10-8 d B/m, and the dispersion variations are lower than 0.31 ps/THz/cm. Effective mode areas are larger than 5.14m m 2. Additionally, the highest mode purity of all vector modes is 99.78%. In addition, modal birefringence, also known as the walk-off length, has also been discussed. All these operation performances indicate that the designed NC-RCF make contributions to the optical communication systems.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To explore the effect of nasal deformity correction after unilateral cleft lip repair with autogenous concha cartilage transplantation. METHODS: Thirteen patients with nasal deformity after unilateral cleft lip surgery were collected, who were treated with autogenous concha cartilage and nasal septum deviation correction at the same time. Their chin-lifting photos were taken before operation, five days, one month and six months after operation. The nasal morphology was evaluated by subjective evaluation and objective measurement, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 21.0 software package. RESULTS: Subjective evaluation showed that there was significant difference in nasal morphology between prior to operation and 5 days postoperatively (P=0.000), but there was no significant difference between 5 days postoperatively and 1 month and 6 months postoperatively(P=0.110, 0.053). In objective measurement, there was no significant difference in the symmetry rate of nasal tip between prior to operation and 5 days, 1 month and 6 months after operation(P=0.051, 0.136, 0.204), but there was significant difference in the symmetry rate of nasal base, nasal columella, extranasal convex angle and nasal alar base inclination angle between prior to operation and 5 days postoperatively(P=0.000, 0.000, 0.000, 0.000). However, there was no significant difference in symmetry rate of the above four indexes between 5 days after operation and 1 month and 6 months after operation(P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Autogenous concha cartilage transplantation can effectively improve the symmetry of nasal floor, columella and alar after operation, and the effect is stable half a year after operation.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To explore the mechanism of upper lip pressure on maxilla after cleft lip surgery. METHODS: ANSYS 17.0 software was used to add the upper lip soft tissue to the finite element model of maxilla with cleft palate, and the material properties was assigned to form a three-dimensional finite element model of maxilla with upper lip. The upper lip pressure was applied to the model and force analysis was performed in 2 groups. In the experimental group, upper lip pressure with cleft lip surgery was applied; in the control group, upper lip pressure in normal children of the same age was applied. RESULTS: Maxillary deformation in the experimental group was greater than that in the control group. Maxillary deformation occurred in three-dimensional direction, which was mainly in Z axis, followed by X axis and Y axis. The anterior segment of alveolar process was the most obvious, and from the anterior to the posterior, the change trend was gradually decreased. CONCLUSIONS: Maxillary growth is inhibited in three-dimensional direction, which is mainly sagittal growth inhibition, followed by transverse and vertical growth. The inhibition gradually decreases from anterior to posterior.

RESUMO

At present, most of the gradient metasurfaces used to construct surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs)/spoof SPPs (SSPs) couplers are usually compact metal antennas working under reflection and transmission. In reflection mode, meta-couplers link propagating waves and surface waves (SWs), and SWs will undergo significant scattering before coupling to an Eigen SPP in the target system. In transmission mode, metal meta-couplers will encounter complex multilayer designing at the microwave/terahertz region and metal absorption loss at optical frequencies. In this Letter, to the best of our knowledge, a novel design using dielectric gradient metasurfaces instead of metal metasurface couplers is proposed to excite broadband SSPs on the metal groove array. We demonstrate that the well-designed phase dielectric gradient metasurface converts the normal incident terahertz wave to the predetermined angle in the dielectric substrate and then excites the broadband SSPs with the transmission coupling between the dielectric meta-coupler and SSPs surface. This research may open up new avenues in simple and broadband plane dielectric meta-couplers for SSPs in ultra-thin and compact functional devices for versatile applications.

RESUMO

Stem cells have been confirmed to be involved in the occurrence and development of diabetic retinopathy; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we used Citespace software to visually analyze 552 articles exploring the stem cell-based treatment of diabetic retinopathy over the past 20 years, which were included in the Web of Science Core Collection. We found the following: (1) a co-citation analysis of the references cited by all 552 articles indicated 15 clusters. In cluster #0, representing the stem cell field, some highly cited landmark studies emerged between 2009-2013. For example, endothelial progenitor cells and diabetic retinopathy gradually received the full attention of scholars, in terms of their relationship and therapeutic prospects. Some researchers also verified the potential of adipose-derived stem cells to differentiate into stable retinal perivascular cells, using a variety of animal models of retinal vascular disease. All of these achievements provided references for the subsequent stem cell research. (2) An analysis of popular keywords among the 552 articles revealed that, during the past 20 years, a relative increase in basic research articles examining stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy was observed. The contents of these articles primarily involved the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor, vascular regeneration, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response. (3) A burst analysis of keywords used in the 552 articles indicated that genetic and cytological research regarding the promotion of angiogenesis was an issue of concern from 2001 to 2012, including several studies addressing the expression of various growth factor genes; from 2014 to 2020, mouse models of diabetic retinopathy were recognized as mature animal models, and the most recent research has focused on macular degeneration, macular edema, neurodegeneration, and inflammatory changes in diabetic animal models. (4) Globally, the current authoritative studies have focused on basic research towards the stem cell treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Existing clinical studies are of low quality and have insufficient evidence levels, and their findings have not yet been widely accepted in clinical practice. Major challenges during stem cell transplantation remain, including stem cell heterogeneity, cell delivery, and the effective homing of stem cells to damaged tissue. However, clinical trials examining potential stem cell-based treatments of diabetic retinopathy, including the use of pluripotent stem cells, retinal pigment epithelial cells, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells, are currently ongoing, and high-quality clinical evidence is likely to appear in the future, to promote clinical transformation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the comprehensive impact of scar and maxillary expansion combined with protraction on the development of maxilla with cleft lip and palate after repair operation. METHODS: In the original finite element model of the maxilla with cleft palate, a finite element model of the maxilla with cleft lip and palate was established by using Boolean operation in ANSYS. Scar force after cleft lip and palate repair and maxillary expansion force combined with protraction were added simultaneously to process the stress analysis. RESULTS: Maxillary deformation occurred in the three-dimensional direction. The comparison of displacements was as follows: X-axis>Z-axis>Y-axis. CONCLUSIONS: Maxillary growth is significantly inhibited in the three-dimensional direction under the comprehensive impact of scar and maxillary expansion combined with protraction after repair operation, especially transverse and sagittal growth.

RESUMO

Polymerization-induced phase separation is comparatively applied to fabricating a superhydrophobic micro/nano surface by microwave and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The monolithic coatings can be tailored easily on different substrates with excellent chemical and mechanical stability in rigid conditions. Importantly, the patterned filter paper is successfully used for the colorimetric detection of nitrite handily.

RESUMO

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a subtype of head and neck cancer with a relatively poor prognosis. The mechanisms underlying the initiation and progression of OSCC are complex and not yet fully understood; however, this information is critical for developing novel therapeutic targets and improving patient outcome. Rab14, a Ras related protein, has been implicated in multiple forms of cancer. In the present study, we confirmed that Rab14 is overexpression in human OSCC tissue, compared with normal oral mucosa samples. In addition, knockdown of Rab14 exerted potent anti-tumor effects by repressing the proliferation and migration of OSCC cell lines. Moreover, knockdown of Rab14 reduced the expression of Cyclin D1 and CXCR4, at the level of protein and mRNA, both in vitro and in vivo.
